MONTREAL (AP) — The Montreal Canadiens are the first team to advance to the second round of the NHL playoffs. The Habs edged Tampa Bay last night 4-3 to take the series 4-0.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — San Jose is one win away from reaching the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs. The Sharks took a 3-0 series lead over the Kings last night in Los Angeles with a 4-3 overtime win. Patrick Marleau scored the game winner against Kings goalie Jonathan Quick.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Albert Pujols (POO’-hohlz) of the Angels has become the 26th player in Major League history to hit 500 career home runs. The 34-year-old slammed two against the Nationals in a 7-2 win last night to become the third-youngest man to reach the milestone.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — There’s an excellent pitching matchup set for this afternoon when the Athletics play host to the Rangers. The game features two three-game winners as Sonny Gray toes the rubber for the A’s against Martin Perez. Each has a sub 2.00 earned run average.
