MATTHEWS, NC — Local grocery wars are heating up as the newest Publix store is open in Matthews. With several stores within miles of the new Florida-based grocer, a price and customer service battle is about to begin.
Matthews shoppers know what they want. The question is, whre are they going to find what they’re looking for? Wednesday, they had a new option. Publix opened its doors off Weddington Road, just a few hundred feet away from Harris Teeter.
“The truth is, competition only makes us stronger,” said Publix Media Relations Manager Kim Reynolds, “and it’s a win for the community and the customer.” The competition, forcing other stores to step up their game.
Shoppers say they’re taking note of Harris Teeter’s new renovations, curbside grocery pickup, and extra deals this week. “They’re letting it be known that Publix is not going to come in here and take all their customers,” said Charlotte resident Shamera Niles. Niles and other shoppers say the grocery wars mean better deals. “It’s good business for us and for them,” she said.
With a Harris Teeter, Walmart, Publix, and a Whole Foods on the way, they’re going to pay close attention to coupons and weekly ads. “They fight over prices over things,” said Matthews resident Daniel Peterson, “so I get to go back and forth and get milk in one place and cereal another place.”
But Publix reps say they hope quality will keep customers coming back. “We think you taste our products, like our scratch baked goods, made fresh daily, you’ll really notice the quality,” said Reynolds.
But even savory sweets or fresher fruits and veggies can’t convince the loyals. “I’m excited about a new store opening,” said Matthews resident Lynn Keith, “but I’m ver Harris Teeter loyal. I’ve shopped at Harris Teeter all my life, and they’ve always done a good job. Always met my needs.”
The Matthews store is Publix’ fifth in the Charlotte region. The chain plans to add two more local stores this year, and six in the Charlotte region next year.
