MLB-SCHEDULE

Six game afternoon schedule

UNDATED (AP) — Baseball in the sun is taking place in six cities today in the big leagues. The early games feature games in New York and Washington as the Yankees entertain the Angels and the Nationals are home to the Padres. The other afternoon games feature the Red Sox in Toronto, Detroit at Minnesota, the Giants home to the Indians and the Pirates in St. Louis.

The evening portion of the schedule has Baltimore hosting Kansas City in the second game of that series, Oakland at Houston, the White Sox at home to the Rays, Miami in New York to play the Mets, Atlanta entertaining the Reds, the Cubs in Milwaukee, the Phillies at Arizona, Seattle home to the Rangers and the Rockies in L.A. against the Dodgers.

NBA PLAYOFFS-SCHEDULE

Two upstarts look to take a 3-1 playoff lead

UNDATED (AP) — Four games are on the NBA playoff schedule today with two being played this afternoon and two more this evening.

In the first game of the day the surprising Hawks are playing host to Indiana, leading the best-of-seven series 2-1. The teams split the first two games in Indianapolis and the Hawks won the third game Thursday by 13 points. The fifth game is Monday night back in Indy.

The other day game is being played in Dallas as the Mavericks entertain the Spurs. San Antonio, the top seed in the Western Conference, won the opening game but lost the second in San Antonio by 21 points. Game 4 will be played Monday in Dallas.

On tap this evening the Miami Heat can take a commanding 3-0 lead over the Bobcats with a win in Charlotte. Miami outscored the ‘Cats by 15 points in the first two games. Game 4 is slated for Monday night in Charlotte.

And in Memphis this evening the surprising Grizzlies are looking to go up 3-1 over Oklahoma City in their first-round affair. The Grizzlies dropped the first game of the series but won the next two. The fifth game will be played Monday back in Oklahoma City.

NHL PLAYOFFS

Bruins and Sharks look to clinch

UNDATED (AP) — The Boston Bruins and San Jose Sharks can advance to the second round of the NHL playoffs with wins today.

This afternoon in Boston the Bruins are playing host to Detroit in the fifth game of their series. Boston leads the best-of-seven affair 3-1, having won the last three games. If needed a sixth game would be played Monday in Detroit.

This evening in San Jose the Sharks can finish off the Los Angeles Kings with a win. The Sharks lead the series 3-1 after winning the first three games of the playoff. Should the Kings win tonight’s game the sixth game will be played Monday back in Tinseltown.

The two remaining games tonight feature series that are deadlocked at two wins apiece. In Pittsburgh the Penguins are playing host to the Blue Jackets while in Denver the Avalanche are home to Minnesota. In each case the sixth game in the series will be played Monday, in Columbus and Saint Paul, Minn.

CAPITALS

Caps let coach and general manager go

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Washington Capitals have cleaned house, firing coach Adam Oates and announcing that they will not renew the contract of general manager George McPhee. The team failed to make the NHL playoffs for the first time since 2007.

Oates, a former star player for the Capitals, had one season left on his three-year contract. This was his first job as a head coach. McPhee’s contract was up. He was GM of the team for 17 years.

NASCAR

Larson has Richmond pole

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Richmond International Raceway hosts tonight’s Toyota Owners 400 Sprint Cup race. Rookie Kyle Larson will start from the pole and Brad Keselowski has the outside of the front row, just ahead of Clint Bowyer and Kasey Kahne (KAYN). Rain yesterday wiped out qualifying, and the field was set based on the fastest laps run in the first practice.

INDYCAR

Open wheel racing in Alabama

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Qualifying for Sunday afternoon’s Indy Car race in Birmingham, Ala., is taking place today. The winner of this race a year ago was Ryan Hunter-Reay with Scott Dixon second. This is the third race of the IndyCar season.

GOLF-ZURICH CLASSIC

Chasing Martin

AVONDALE, La. (AP) — Ben Martin is the leader entering third round play at the PGA’s Zurich Classic. Martin followed his course-record 62 on Thursday with a 67 for a 15-under total, three shots ahead of Andrew Svoboda and four better than Robert Streb and Seung-yul Noh. Martin has never finished higher than third in a PGA event.

GOLF-SWINGING SKIRTS CLASSIC

Lewis leads

DALY CITY, Calif. (AP) — Stacy Lewis carries a one-shot lead over Lydia Ko and Karine Icher (kah-REEN’ EE’-shur) into the third round of the Swinging Skirts LPGA Classic in California.

Lewis is on top following back-to-back 3-under-par 69s. She’s seeking her first victory since the Women’s British Open last August.
