Former Town Clerk In Connelly Springs Convicted Of Embezzlement

BURK COUNTY, N.C. — The former Town Clerk in Connelly Springs was convicted of embezzlement. 

The District Attorney’s Officer says 61-year-old Jeanine Barus was sentenced to a suspended sentence of no less than 6 months and no more than 17 months in jail and will be placed on supervised probation for 36 months. 

Barus was also ordered to pay $25,000 restitution.  Barus did not have a prior record and pled guilty to the charges. 

Officials say over a 7-year period she purchased approximately $25,000 in goods and services using town funds for her own personal use. 

The purchases included groceries, power bill payments and phone bill payments.
