Protesters Rally Against Duke Energy

CHARLOTTE, NC — A loud and clear message to Duke Energy: protesters banged drums and pulled crime scene tape outside of the company’s shareholder’s meeting in uptown Charlotte Thursday.  They’re upset, in part, about a coal ash spill that coated 70 miles of the Dan River with toxic sludge.

“They have for years been taking the easy way out,” said protester Jann Herman.  “The way that makes money for them and puts incredible health costs on the backs of North Carolina citizens.”

Duke Energy says it will pay to clean up the Dan River spill, but is asking state regulators to pass the costs of closing its 33 coal ash ponds on to customers.
