Β CHARLOTTE, NC — Charlotte educators want lawmakers to hear their message loud and clear when the general assembly returns to Raleigh. Β The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Association of Educators want raises for all school employees, not just teachers. Β Teachers want to reinstate higher pay for higher degrees. Β Educators also believe kids are being over-tested. Β They want to limit the amount of standardized testing in the classroom.

“It’s not just teachers,” said Charles Smith of CMAE. Β “I mean, we’re not just here to say, ‘Give us more money’. Β We’re here to say, ‘Fund public education in the way that it should be funded in North Carolina.'”

Veteran teachers say Governor Pat McCrory’s teacher pay-raise doesn’t help them. Β State lawmakers plan to raise the starting salary to $35,000. Β The state house and senate convene May 4.
