LANCASTER, SC – “I heard something, and it sounded like firecrackers. It hit three times and then it paused. And did it again. By then I was hitting the floor,” says one neighbor.
Neighbors describe the chaos as gunfire erupted Saturday afternoon in Lancaster.
Investigators say Sammy Lee Baskins Jr. shot and killed himself after being surrounded by police.
It happened after a shooting spree that started at Penny Street and Central Avenue. There police say he shot a 56-year old woman several times. “I mean, I’ve been knowing her for a couple of years. And I hate this happened,” says neighbor Angela Hood.
A few minutes later, police say Baskins drove a couple of miles away to the Palmetto Place Apartments. Investigators say there he targeted a 28-year-old woman.
“I saw this girl, standing like, right in here, with a white shirt on, red shoes, with a baby in her hand. And then I heard a gunshot and I saw her pulling her shirt away from her like she had been shot,” says neighbor Simone Truesdale.
Truesdale says the woman was able to hand the baby to someone else before running for help.
