KANNAPOLIS, NC — A house fire that killed an elderly Kannapolis couple appears to have been an accident.  Firefighters found 82-year-old Paul McLendon and his 87-year-old wife Lillie inside their home on North Ridge Avenue early Monday morning.  Next-door-neighbor Terry Davis says his barking dog woke him up around 3am.  By that time, he says the flames were just too high.

“Finally got the front open, but there was too much smoke and the flames were too high,” said Davis.  “So then I grabbed my hose pipe and just started putting water in the windows, trying to knock down the flames.”

It took crews from five fire departments to put out the blaze.  Kannapolis police are investigating the cause.
