CHARLOTTE, NC — Charlotte doctors and cancer survivors are leading the charge to keep children under 18 out of tanning beds.
A mother diagnosed with melanoma admits she tanned a handful of times as a teen. She believes that put her at risk. Now she’s part of a coalition asking the North Carolina Senate to ban teen indoor tanning.
“That was more than enough to do the damage,” said Anne Bowman. “So I wish I could go back to my 16-year-old self and beg that person not to step foot in a tanning bed, but I can’t.”
The CDC says people who tan before the age of 35 have a 59 percent higher risk of melanoma. At least six states have banned teen tanning.
