Β CHARLOTTE, NC — Children are at the heart of Charlotte’s latest budget battle. Β City Council tweaked a proposed budget plan Wednesday night and could give more funding to two after-school programs.

Initially, the YWCA and Above and Beyond Students weren’t recommended for full funding. Β Wednesday, Council proposed adding $411,000 to the budget to keep the after-school programs afloat.

“We recognize that the economy is not what we want it to be,” said City Council member Greg Phipps (D), “but we have to make, I think, those critical decisions that will keep our city moving forward.”

Council will vote on the $2.1 billion budget on June 9. Β It does not call for a property tax hike, but includes a two percent increase in water, sewer, and storm water fees.
