CHARLOTTE, NC — There will be an added police presence in uptown Charlotte this week for Speed Street. The city has declared the racing celebration an “extraordinary event” for the third year in a row.
Thousands of people will pack the heart of uptown beginning on Thursday. The declaration gives police more power to control the crowds. Officers will also focus on Charlotte’s teen curfew and alcohol enforcement.
Crews will start closing roads Wednesday to get ready for Speed Street. South Tryon Street will be blocked from Stonewall to West Trade Street. Part of East Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard will be one lane only. Roads are expected to reopen Sunday morning.
