Β WASHINGTON, D.C. — President Obama has signed the Kilah Davenport Child Protection Act into law. Β It’s named after a Monroe girl severely beaten by her stepfather. Β States will be required to report back to the US Attorney General on exactly what their punishments are for child abuse. Β
NC Representative Robert Pittenger sponsored the bill. Β He says it gives states a chance to review and hopefully strengthen laws. Β “It’s a wonderful day for children that will be better protected,” said Pittenger. Β “It’s a wonderful day for the Davenport family. Β They’ve been through a very difficult journey.”
Four-year-old Kilah died in March, almost two years after she suffered a fractured skull and permanent brain damage.
