GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) β Drew Van Orden struck out eight and Duke hit three home runs in beating Georgia Tech 6-0 at the Atlantic Coast Conference baseball tournament. Van Orden allowed five hits on Thursday to help the fourth-seeded Blue Devils improve to 1-1 in pool play at the tournament. They’ll face top-seeded Miami on Saturday.
GREENVILLE, N.C. (AP) β East Carolina says defensive end Terrell Stanley will miss this season while he recovers from injuries suffered in a February car accident. Coach Ruffin McNeill said Thursday that the coaches “admire his determination” but “his full recovery and health are our first priority.”
CONCORD, N.C. (AP) β Jimmie Johnson won the pole Thursday night for the Coca-Cola 600. Johnson turned a lap at 194.911 mph at Charlotte Motor Speedway in the third round of NASCAR’s knockout qualifying format for his first pole of the Sprint Cup season. Brad Keselowski will start alongside Johnson on the front row Sunday night.
