Buehrle wins eighth…White Sox have a great Sale

UNDATED (AP) β€” Mark Buehrle (BUR’-lee) won his major league-leading eighth game, Melky Cabrera and Jose Bautista homered on consecutive pitches, and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Boston Red Sox 7-2 to finish a three-game sweep. Toronto improved to 8-2 in its last 10 games, while Boston has lost seven in a row.

Buehrle is 8-1. He allowed two runs in the first two innings but settled down and finished with five strikeouts in his seven innings. He retired 11 of his final 12 batters.

The Red Sox went 0-6 on their home stand. It’s the first time since June 1994 when they also lost six in a row at Fenway Park, that they were winless on a homestand of at least six games.

In other finals:

β€” The Chicago White Sox held off the New York Yankees 3-2. Chris Sale retired 18 of 19 batters over six scoreless innings in his return from an arm injury. Sale struck out 10 and improved to 4-0. He had missed a month because of a flexor strain in his arm.

β€” Shin-Soo Choo hit a two-run homer and Chris Gimenez had a career-best four hits to lead Texas to a 9-2 rout of slumping Detroit. Adrian Beltre (BEHL’-tray) drove in a two runs to help the Rangers hand the Tigers their fifth straight loss.

β€” Ryan Doumit’s pinch-hit single drove in two runs, capping a three-run seventh inning that carried the Atlanta Braves to a 5-4 victory over Milwaukee.

β€” St. Louis doubled up Arizona 4-2 to complete a three-game sweep. Allen Craig drove in the go-ahead run with a two-out double in the seventh.

β€” The New York Mets beat the L.A. Dodgers 5-3. Jonathon Niese hit an RBI double and also pitched seven innings for the victory. Zach Greinke’s stretch of 21 straight starts allowing two or fewer runs ended.

β€” Pittsburgh beat Washington 3-1. Edinson Volquez allowed one run in six sharp innings and combined with three relievers on a five-hitter.

β€” Christian Yelich delivered two-out, run scoring single in the bottom of the ninth to give Miami a 4-3 win over Philadelphia. Yelich gave the Marlins their fifth walkoff win of the season.

β€” Cleveland outlasted Baltimore 8-7 in 13 innings. Carlos Santana doubled in two runs with two outs in the 13th for the Tribe.

β€” Sean Rodriguez hit a three-run home run with two out in the 11th inning to lift the Tampa Bay Rays to a 5-2 victory over the Oakland Athletics.

β€” Seattle beat Houston 3-1. Michael Saunders’ infield single snapped a 1-1 tie in the seventh inning for the Mariners.

β€” The Chicago Cubs beat San Diego 5-1. Anthony Rizzo hit a two-run homer against his former team and Jake Arrieta pitched seven strong innings for his first victory.

β€” The game between the Colorado Rockies and San Francisco Giants was suspended after the second rain delay with the score tied 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning. It will be made up when the Giants next visit Coors Field in September.

Fielder to have neck surgery, season’s over

UNDATED (AP) β€” Prince Fielder is set to have neck surgery next week and will miss the rest of the season. Texas Rangers general manager Jon Daniels says that the herniated disk in Fielder’s neck has gotten worse.

Daniels says the team will get a second opinion, but expects the diagnosis to be confirmed.

Fielder had played in 547 consecutive games, then the longest active streak in the majors, before receiving a nerve root block injection Saturday to treat his neck.

NHL PLAYOFFS

Canadiens end Rangers playoff streak

NEW YORK (AP))β€” Alex Galchenyuk (gal-CHEHN’-yuk) scored 1:12 into overtime to give the Montreal Canadiens a 3-2 victory that cut the New York Rangers lead to 2-1 in the NHL Eastern Conference final. That ends the Rangers’ five-game winning streak in the postseason.

Galchenyuk, playing only his second game of these playoffs after returning from an injury Monday, deflected a feed from Tomas Plekanec (pleh-KAH’-nehch) to win it.

The Rangers tied it with 28.1 seconds left in regulation on Chris Kreider’s (KRY’-durz) goal.

Rookie Montreal goalie Dustin Tokarski (toh-KAHR’-skee) kept the Canadiens in the game with 35 saves in just his second playoff start in place of injured Carey Price.

Game 4 is Sunday night in New York.

NHL-ISLANDERS

Halak signs 4-year deal

UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) β€” The New York Islanders agreed to a four-year contract with goaltender Jaroslav Halak (YAR’-oh-slav HAH’-lak).

The 28-year-old Halak split his eighth NHL season between St. Louis and Washington, compiling a 29-13-7 record. The native of Slovakia was acquired by New York from Washington for a fourth-round draft pick and could have become a free agent.

HOCKEY-WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

US, Canada out in quarters

MINSK, Belarus (AP) β€” The U.S. and Canada have been eliminated from ice hockey world championship in the quarterfinals. The Czech Republic scored three second-period, power-play goals on the way to a 4-3 win over the United States. Finland edged Canada 3-2.

The Czechs will take on Finland in one semifinal, while Russia faces off with Sweden in the other.

NBA-PACERS-GEORGE

Pacers careful with George

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) β€” Indiana has kept Paul George out of contact drills during Thursday’s practice because of a concussion.

It’s still uncertain whether the Pacers leading scorer will be cleared to play in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference finals Saturday in Miami. George was diagnosed with a concussion less than 24 hours a collision with Miami’s Dwyane Wade near the end of Game 2.

At practice, George wore a red jersey, took shots and even dunked a ball before leaving the court. He did not take questions.

Nets Williams to have double ankle surgery…All-Rookie team

NEW YORK (AP) β€” Brooklyn guard Deron (DEHR’-ehn) Williams will have surgery next week on both ankles, which have plagued him the last two seasons.

β€” Philadelphia’s Michael Carter-Williams has been unanimously chosen to the NBA’s all-rookie team. Joining him on the first team is Orlando’s Victor Oladipo (OH’-luh-dee-poh), Utah’s Trey Burke, Brooklyn’s Mason Plumlee and New York’s Tim Hardaway Jr.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL-UCONN-OLLIE

UConn’s Ollie gets big new deal

STORRS, Conn. (AP) β€” Connecticut basketball coach Kevin Ollie has agreed to a $15 million, five-year contract after leading the Huskies to the national championship this year.

Ollie has compiled a 52-18 record in his two seasons with the Huskies. He took over a team that was banned from the postseason in his first year due to past academic problems.

NASCAR-COCA COLA 600

Johnson wins pole

CONCORD, N.C. (AP) β€” Jimmie Johnson won the pole for Sunday night’s Coca-Cola 600.

Johnson turned a lap at 194.911 mph at Charlotte Motor Speedway in the third round of NASCAR’s knockout qualifying format for his first pole of the Sprint Cup season. Johnson has six Charlotte victories including a run of five wins in a six-race stretch from 2003 to 2005.

Brad Keselowski will start alongside Johnson on the front row Sunday night in the longest Sprint Cup race of the year. It’s the seventh time this season Keselowski will start on the front row.

Kasey Kahne (kayn) was third, followed by Danica Patrick and Clint Bowyer (BOY’-ur).

NFL-BRONCOS

Arrest warrant issued for safety Ward

DENVER (AP) β€” Police have issued an arrest warrant for Broncos safety T.J. Ward on an assault charge stemming from a fight at a Denver strip club on May 9. Ward is coming off a Pro Bowl season in Cleveland and this spring signed a four-year, $22.5 million deal with Denver, where he’ll play strong safety.

WORLD CUP-US ROSTER

Donovan cut

STANFORD, Calif. (AP) β€” American career scoring leader Landon Donovan is among seven players cut as the U.S. announced its 23-man World Cup roster.

The 32-year-old attacker was bidding to make his fourth World Cup team.

Also cut were defenders Brad Evans, Clarence Goodson and Michael Parkhurst; midfielders Joe Corona and Maurice Edu; and forward Terrence Boyd.

GOLF-COLONIAL

Dustin Johnson has the lead

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) β€” Dustin Johnson shot a bogey-free 5-under 65 to take a one-stroke lead after the first round at Colonial. Hunter Mahan (MAY’-han), Tim Wilkinson and Hunter English are one shot back. Jimmy Walker, a three-time winner this season, was in the group at 67.

Adam Scott shot a 1-over 71 in the opening round of the Colonial in his first competition since becoming the No. 1-ranked golfer in the world earlier this week. That puts Scott six shots back of the leader.

GOLF-SENIOR PGA CHAMPIONSHIP

Durant leads

BENTON HARBOR, Mich. (AP) β€” Joe Durant birdied his final hole for a 6-under 65 and a one-stroke lead after the first round of the Senior PGA Championship.

Dan Forsman, fighting an arthritic left hip, opened with a 66, and Brad Faxon had a 67. Mark Brooks and P.H. Horgan III shot 68, and two-time Senior PGA winner Jay Haas and Colin Montgomerie were in the group at 69.

LPGA-AIRBUS LPGA CLASSIC

Matthew grabs lead

MOBILE, Ala. (AP) β€” Scotland’s Catriona Matthew shot an 8-under 64 to take the first round lead of the Airbus LPGA Classic. Charley Hull, an 18-year-old Englishwoman, is one shot back. Stacy Lewis shot a 66 as she attempts to overtake Inbee Park for the No. 1 world ranking. Lewis has a victory and seven other top 10 finishes this year.
