Duke wins 6th NCAA women’s golf title
TULSA, Okla. (AP) β Duke held off Southern California by two strokes Friday for its sixth NCAA women’s golf title, and the Trojans’ Doris Chen took the individual championship.
Duke, six strokes ahead of Southern California entering the final round, had a 6-under 274 total at Tulsa Country Club to finish at 10-over 1,130. The Trojans, the winner last year, shot 10-under 270.
Duke coach Dan Brooks also led the Blue Devils to titles in 1999, 2002, 2005, 2006 and 2007. The hail-shortened 1999 event also was played at Tulsa Country Club.
Chen closed with a 3-under 67 for a two-stroke victory over Duke’s Celine Boutier. Chen finished at 6-under 274. Boutier, tied with Chen for the third-round lead, shot 69.
UCLA was third at 25 over, followed by Oklahoma at 27 over and Arizona State at 30 over.
WINSTON-SALEM-SPORTS DROPPED
Winston-Salem State to drop 2 sports in fall
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) β Winston-Salem State says it is dropping women’s bowling and men’s tennis from its athletics program.
A statement issued by the school Friday said only three athletes are impacted by the decision, which drops the school to 11 sports. One part-time head coach will lost their job.
The school said athletes participating in the affected sports who continue their undergraduate education at Winston-Salem State will continue to receive their athletic aid for the 2014-15 school year if they were receiving it. The school also will grant releases to student-athletes who choose to transfer to another school.
ACC-GEORGIA TECH-CLEMSON
Georgia Tech beats Clemson 3-0 in ACC tournament
GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) β Mott Hyde hit a two-run homer, while Dusty Isaacs and Sam Clay combined for a shutout to help Georgia Tech beat Clemson 3-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament.
Isaacs (7-5) earned the win on Friday by allowing one hit in five innings, while Clay allowed just three hits from there for the ninth-seeded Yellow Jackets (35-25). They finished 2-1 in pool play and will advance to Sunday’s final if top-seeded Miami (0-2) beats No. 4 seed Duke (1-1) on Saturday.
Garrett Boulware had two hits for the fifth-seeded Tigers (36-23), who also finished 2-1 in Pool A. Georgia Tech has the head-to-head tiebreaker on Clemson if Duke loses to Miami, while a Duke win would create a three-way tie that sends Duke to the final due to its higher regular-season league winning percentage.
Clate Schmidt (5-7) took the loss, allowing eight hits and two runs in 8 1-3 innings.
HORNETS-HENDERSON
Hornets G Henderson undergoes wrist surgery
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) β Charlotte Hornets guard Gerald Henderson has undergone arthroscopic surgery on his right wrist to remove scar tissue.
A statement from the team said the surgery was performed at the Duke University Medical Center by Dr. David Ruch. Henderson’s wrist will be immobilized for approximately two weeks before he begins rehabilitation.
Henderson averaged 14.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and 2.6 assists in 32 minutes per game in 77 starts for Charlotte last season.
The No. 12 pick in the 2009 NBA Draft, Henderson has played in 311 career games for Charlotte.
BENGALS MOVES
Bengals sign 4th-round pick Russell Bodine
CINCINNATI (AP) β The Bengals signed fourth-round pick Russell Bodine, a center from North Carolina who will block for former college teammate Giovani Bernard in Cincinnati.
The signing Friday leaves the Bengals with five of their eight picks under contract.
Bodine is only the third player in franchise history who was acquired through a trade to move up in a round. The Bengals swapped two picks with Seattle for the chance to get Bodine, who will have a chance to win the starting job. Veteran center Kyle Cook was released in the offseason.
Cincinnati also has signed quarterback A.J. McCarron (fifth round), linebacker Marquis Flowers (sixth round), receiver James Wright (seventh round) and cornerback Lavelle Westbrooks (seventh round).

Maryland beats Florida State 5-3 in ACC tournament
GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) β Jose Cuas drove in three runs to help Maryland beat Florida State 5-3 in the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament.

Mike Shawaryn (10-3) earned the win, allowing two hits in seven innings.
