Tigers end skid…Birds cool off Indians…Reds hammer Miller

UNDATED (AP) β€” The Detroit Tigers have ended their four-game skid by getting a strong pitching performance after surrendering 31 runs during the losing streak.

Anibal (AH’-nih-bahl) Sanchez spotted Texas a quick 2-0 lead before he and the Tigers bullpen gave up little else in a 7-2 win over the Rangers. Sanchez allowed just five hits in seven innings,

Austin Jackson hit a two-run homer and Andrew Romine smacked his first major league round-tripper for Detroit. Ian Kinsler doubled three times against his former team to help Sanchez earn a victory in his longest outing of the season.

β€” Cleveland’s four-game winning streak is over after Chris Davis hit a solo homer and had four RBIs in Baltimore’s 8-4 drubbing of the Indians. Adam Jones had three hits and scored three runs, Nelson Cruz hit his 15th homer and Nick Markakis (mahr-KAY’-kihs) had four hits for the Orioles.

β€” Liam Hendriks won his season debut and Steve Tolleson hit a two-run home run in Toronto’s ninth victory in 11 games, 3-2 over Oakland. Hendriks allowed one run and three hits in 5 2/3 innings for the AL East leaders.

β€” Tampa Bay pulled out a 1-0 win over the Red Sox on pinch-hitter Cole Figueroa’s RBI double in the bottom of the ninth. Boston has scored just 16 runs during its eight-game losing streak.

β€” Adam Dunn ripped a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth to give the Chicago White Sox a 6-5 win over the New York Yankees. Dunn also scored on a two-run blast by Alexei Ramirez in the fifth.

β€” Felix Hernandez pitched well in Seattle’s 6-1 win over Houston, allowing a run and five hits while striking out nine in eight innings. Willie Bloomquist hit a two-run homer and had three RBIs, while Kyle Seager drove in three runs with a pair of singles.

β€” C.J. Wilson gave up a run and just four hits in 6 1/3 innings to pitch the Angels past the Royals 6-1. Mike Trout and Chris Iannetta (eye-uh-NET’-uh) hit solo homers for the Halos.

β€” Pablo Sandoval belted a three-run homer in the first inning before Brandon Belt added a solo blast and a sacrifice fly in San Francisco’s 6-2 win against Minnesota. Tim Lincecum (LIHN’-seh-kuhm) was reached for just two runs in six innings despite allowing five hits and six walks.

β€” Gerald Laird had two hits and two RBIs, including a tiebreaking single in the eighth inning of Atlanta’s 3-2 verdict over Colorado. The Rockies finished the game without third baseman Nolan Arenado, who broke his left middle finger on a head-first slide in the second inning.

β€” Mark Reynolds hit a pair of two-run homers and Khris Davis went deep in Milwaukee’s 9-5 win at Miami. The Marlins lost despite belting four home runs, two each by Giancarlo Stanton and Garrett Jones.

β€” Todd Frazier hit a three-run homer and Devin Mesoraco (mehs-ah-RAH’-koh) added a solo shot in Cincinnati’s 5-3 win against St. Louis. Losing pitcher Shelby Miller gave up five runs in five innings after winning his last six decisions.

β€” Pedro Alvarez belted a two-run homer to put the Pirates ahead 4-0 in the fourth inning of a 4-3 triumph against Washington. Charlie Morton earned his first victory in 16 starts since last Sept. 2, allowing a run and five hits in 5 2/3 innings.

β€” Clayton Kershaw allowed two hits over six innings of the Dodgers’ 2-0 shutout of the Phillies in Philadelphia. Carl Crawford hit a solo homer and Yasiel Puig (YAH’-see-ul pweeg) put Los Angeles ahead with an RBI single in the first inning.

β€” Yonder Alonso smacked a two-run homer and Chase Headley had three RBIs in the Padres’ 11-1 laugher against the Cubs in San Diego. Yasmani Grandal (yahz-MAH’-nee grahn-DAHL’) added a solo homer and two RBIs to support Tim Stauffer, who held the Cubs to two hits in five shutout innings.

β€” Arizona was leading the Mets 2-0 in New York when the game was postponed by rain in the fourth inning. The game will be made up as part of a single-admission doubleheader Sunday.

MLB-RANGERS

Fielder done for the season

DETROIT (AP) β€” The Texas Rangers have placed first baseman Prince Fielder on the disabled list, days before he is scheduled to have season-ending neck surgery. Fielder faces cervical fusion surgery Tuesday for the herniated disk in his neck. It is the first time Fielder has been on the DL in his career. His streak had reached 547 consecutive games, the longest active streak in the majors.

NBA-STERLING

Deal in the works to sell the Clippers

LOS ANGELES (AP) β€” Donald Sterling has agreed to surrender his stake in the Los Angeles Clippers to his wife, and she is moving forward with selling the team. That’s according to a person with knowledge of the negotiations. The person said that the couple made the agreement after weeks of discussion.

Shelly Sterling is working to resolve the dispute amicably and has been in talks with her attorney and NBA lawyers for the last few weeks. The individual told the AP that she has no plans on suing the NBA.

Commissioner Adam Silver banned Donald Sterling for life and fined him $2.5 million because of racist comments. The league has charged him with damaging the league and its teams.

NBA PLAYOFFS-THUNDER

Good news for Thunder

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) β€” The Oklahoma City Thunder say defensive standout Serge Ibaka (ih-BAH’-kah) may not be lost for the playoffs after all. General manager Sam Presti says Ibaka’s injured left calf is showing a level of movement “not thought possible.” The Thunder lost the first two games of the best of seven series and will serve as host for Game 3 Sunday.

NBA PLAYOFFS-PACERS

Green light for George

MIAMI (AP) β€” Indiana Pacers star Paul George is expected to play in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference finals against the Heat in Miami. The Pacers have announced that George has been cleared “to return to normal basketball activity,” a decision made three days after he was concussed in Game 2 of the series.

NFL-IRSAY ARRESTED

Irsay charged

NOBLESVILLE, Ind. (AP) β€” Prosecutors have charged Colts owner Jim Irsay with two misdemeanor counts stemming from his intoxicated driving arrest near his home in March.

Hamilton County prosecutors said Irsay was charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated and operating a vehicle with a schedule I or II controlled substance or its metabolite in the body. The charges carry maximum penalties of 60 days in jail and $500 fines for each count. A probable cause affidavit said Irsay was driving under the influence of oxycodone and/or hydrocodone, both powerful painkillers.

Police had filed four preliminary felony counts of possession of a controlled substance but took weeks before deciding to file the misdemeanor charges instead.

NFL-BRONCOS-RUSSELL

Broncos exec gets jail time

BRECKENRIDGE, Colo. (AP) β€” A Broncos executive accused of crashing into two cars while driving drunk has been sentenced to seven months in jail after he pleaded guilty to driving under the influence and careless driving resulting in injury.

Director of player personnel Matt Russell was charged after a vehicle ran into the back of a police car in Summit County over the 4th of July holiday.

He’s been approved for work release and will take part in a court-ordered treatment plan.

NHL PLAYOFFS-SUSPENSIONS

Carcillo, Prust suspended

TORONTO (AP) β€” The NHL has given New York Rangers forward Daniel Carcillo an automatic 10-game suspension after he was ejected for physical abuse of officials during Thursday’s Game 3 of the Eastern Conference finals against Montreal.

Carcillo appeared to twice elbow linesman Scott Driscoll, who was trying to keep Carcillo away from a fight.

The NHL has suspended Montreal forward Brandon Prust for two games for his hit on New York’s Derek Stepan in Game 3. Stepan’s jaw was broken on the hit and he will need surgery. It’s not known how long he’ll be out.

Prust wasn’t penalized on the play.

NHL-LIGHTNING

Johnson signs with Tampa Bay

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) β€” The Tampa Bay Lightning have signed center Tyler Johnson to a three-year contract. He is a finalist for the NHL’s top rookie award. Johnson had a rookie team-record 24 goals along 26 assists.

GOLF-COLONIAL

Unknown grabs lead

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) β€” PGA Tour rookie Brice Garnett is the leader through two rounds of the Colonial in Fort Worth. Garnett shot a 4-under-par 66 on Friday for a 7-under total, one shot ahead of Chris Stroud and Robert Streb.

Stroud made five putts from more than 20 feet in a 6-under 64.

GOLF-SENIOR PGA CHAMPIONSHIP

Bryant joins leaders

BENTON HARBOR, Mich. (AP) β€” Tom Watson is in a six-way tie for the lead through 36 holes of the Senior PGA Championship.

Watson had five birdies and a double bogey in a 3-under-par 68 that leaves him minus-4 at Harbor Shores in Michigan.

Bernard Langer also had a 68, and Colin Montgomerie shot 69 to join Watson, Bart Bryant, Steen Tinning and Kiyoshi Murota atop the leaderboard.

LPGA-AIRBUS LPGA CLASSIC

Hull has the lead

MOBILE, Ala. (AP) β€” Catriona Matthew remains atop the Airbus LPGA Classic leaderboard, birdieing four of the last seven holes to take a one-stroke advantage over Charley Hull into the weekend.

The 44-year-old Matthew had a 5-under 67 to reach 13-under 131 on the Crossings Course.

NCAA-LAW SUIT

NCAA faces a pair of trials

UNDATED (AP) β€” A federal judge has denied the NCAA’s request to delay the trial on the antitrust suit by former UCLA basketball player Ed O’Bannon and others. The trial will begin June 9 in Oakland, California, and has the potential to reshape the way major college sports operate. The suit will center on claims that the NCAA conspired to restrain competition in Division I sports and in the group licensing of broadcasts and videogames.

FRENCH OPEN

Draw is set

PARIS (AP) β€” The draw has been announced for the French Open. Play in the second Grand Slam event of the year starts this Sunday in Paris. The defending champions are Rafael Nadal (rah-fay-ehl nah-DAHL’) and Serena Williams and they are the top seeds this year. Nadal is out for his ninth French championship this year.
