CONCORD, NC — Clean up happens quickly at the Charlotte Motor Speedway. Less than 24 hours after Jimmie Johnson won the Coca Cola 600, most race fans have packed up. Monday morning, crews picked up 150 tons of trash at the Speedway. Workers found cell phones, abandoned grills, and furniture.
Campers say there’s a lot to love about the Speedway. “One nice thing,” said Atlanta resident Doug Owens, “we’ve been to a lot of tracks, but one nice thing about Charlotte in the afternoon, that the sun goes down behind the stands and it gets cool real quick like.”
And in uptown, about 400,000 people attended the Coca Cola Speed Street. The three-day festival generates about $230 million. CMPD arrested 16 people this year, down from 19 arrests at last year’s festival.
