RALEIGH, NC — North Carolina senators are offering veteran teachers the choice between a double-digit pay increase, or keeping their job protections.  The proposed senate budget will include raises of more than 10 percent for teachers who give up career status.

Charles Smith, president of the Charlotte- Mecklenburg Association of Educators, calls this is an attempt by the General Assembly to intimidate teachers.  “The General Assembly is using teachers as pawns in a game,” he said, “and we’re always the losing part of the game.”

Giving up tenure rights would increase the state-supplied salary of a teacher with five years of experience from almost $31,000 this year to $35,000 next year.
