ROCK HILL, SC – Some students at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, SC say they weren’t prepared for a 40 percent tuition hike.
Atetta Mobley is one of many Winthrop summer students who say they were surprised when they got their tuition bill. “I think it’s ridiculous, I think it’s already hard for the students to pay this tuition,” she says.
In-state students at Winthrop this summer will pay $420 per credit hour. That’s $1,260 for a 3 hour course. Last year, students paid $299 per hour or $897 for a 3 hour course.
Winthrop Junior Alicia Tosca says it puts a tight squeeze on students already struggling to make ends meet. “I understand that eventually tuition is going to increase because our new president wants to do a lot more things and (to) have more students come,” Tosca says. “But I feel like they should have increased it maybe a little bit smaller.”
And while Winthrop has one of the highest tuition rates during the fall and spring, it’s one of the lowest during the summer. The $1,260 summer rate at Winthrop is still less than $1,302 for a 3 hour class at USC or $1,650 at Clemson.
