Β WASHINGTON, DC —Β The Army is conducting a new investigation into Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl’s disappearance. Β A military report in 2009 concluded he left his post willingly. Β The report did not label Bergdahl a deserter because officials couldn’t ask him why he left. Β Some former soldiers who served with Bergdahl have criticized the rescue operation. Β

Tuesday, President Obama defended the decision to get Bergdahl back. Β “Whatever those circumstances may turn out to be, we still get an American soldier back if he’s held in captivity. Period.”

Bergdahl spent five years in captivity. Β He was freed on Saturday in exchange for five Taliban detainees who were held at Guantanamo Bay.
