Activists: Undercover Video Shows Mistreatment of Animals at NC Plant

RAEFORD, NC — An animal rights group has released new video of what it calls abuse of baby turkeys at a Butterball facility in North Carolina.  Mercy for Animals went undercover at the plant in Raeford to shoot the video.  The group says the birds are mishandled, mutilated without painkillers, and ground up alive.  Activists say state lawmakers are trying to pass legislation that will make videos like this inadmissible in court.

“This is clearly not in the interest of animals or in the interest of people in North Carolina who want more transparency in food production,” said Matt Rice of Mercy for Animals.

Butterball says it has a zero-tolerance policy for the mistreatment of animals.  The company says an internal investigation found this video of the workers to be compliant with industry practices.
