CHARLOTTE, NC — These days, it seems you can’t even mow the lawn without someone targeting your home. CMPD is warning residents to be careful with when, and for how long, they leave their garage doors open.
People are casing neighborhoods and stealing stuff out of open garages. Officer Chris Kopp in the University City Division tells WCCB it’s a crime that happens in less than 15 seconds. They’ve seen a spike in the last two weeks.
“In one case we had, a homeowner was moving his lawn and two bicycles were taken while he was in his own front yard,” said Officer Kopp. “And we kinda go through this every year. It kinda spikes around, once the weather starts getting nice.”
Police haven’t made any arrests yet, but they have recovered some of the stolen property. They recommend that if you can’t see your garage door, it should be closed even if you’re home.
