Mtn. Island Drowning Victim Identified

MT. HOLLY, N.C. — Gaston County Police have released the name of the Mountain Island Lake drowning victim.

Police say 19-year-old Jaquez D’Andre Hunter-Cathey was swimming with three friends on Tuesday when he went under and never came back up. He was last seen swimming in a cove near the Cowan’s Ford Dam.

Officials say the teen’s friends waited two hours to call police. During the investigation,the friend’s told police a bystander said he saw Hunter-Cathey exit the water on the side of the cove. The friend’s began searching for him in the woods and in the water but were unsuccessful.

Search and rescue crews recovered the teen’s body around 8:12 p.m.
