Teen Drowns in Mountain Island Lake

MT. HOLLY, N.C. — Search and rescue crews have recovered the body of a missing teen who drowned in Mountain Island Lake on Tuesday night.

Police say the 19-year-old victim, Jaquez D’Andre Hunter-Cathey was spending the day with friends on the lake when he went under and never came back up in a cove near the Cowan’s Ford Dam.  

Officials say the teen’s friends waited two hours to call police. Some told officials they didn’t notice he was missing.

The 911 call came in to police at 6:30pm on Tuesday. Dive crews responded and two hours later, they found the victim’s body. Officials say the water was 15 feet deep where the victim was found.

Gaston County Police say there is no indication that alcohol was involved. There are conflicting stories from friends whether the victim could swim.
