Spurs take the fifth
SAN ANTONIO (AP) β The San Antonio Spurs are NBA champions for the fifth time since 1999 following their third straight convincing win over the Miami Heat.
Kawhi (kah-WY’) Leonard delivered 22 points and 10 rebounds as the Spurs ripped Miami 104-87 to win the finals in five games. Patty Mills provided a big spark off the bench, going 5-for-8 from 3-point range and scoring 17 points in just over 18 minutes. Manu Ginobili (MAN’-oo-jih-NOH’-blee) was one of five Spurs with at least 14 points, finishing with 19 on 6 of 11 shooting.
Miami jumped out to a 22-6 lead and appeared poised to avenge its two lopsided losses at home, but the Spurs immediately went on a 9-0 run to close the gap before outscoring the Heat 25-11 in the second quarter. San Antonio’s lead grew to 21 points late in the third quarter, allowing Spurs fans to enjoy the final 15 minutes without much worry.
LeBron James had 31 points, 10 rebounds and five assists, but the rest of Miami’s starting five combined for just 32 points. The Heat starters shot just 39 percent, with Chris Bosh, Dwyane (dwayn) Wade and Ray Allen combining to go 11-34.

Kaymer wins Open
PINEHURST, N.C. (AP) β Martin Kaymer (KY’-mur) is just the seventh player in U.S. Open history to post a wire-to-wire victory.
The German closed with a 15-foot par putt for a 1-under 69 and a 9-under total, eight shots ahead of Erik Compton and Rickie Fowler. Kaymer tied for the fourth-largest margin of victory at the Open and became the first German to capture the trophy. European players have won the event four times in the last five years.
Kaymer led by at least four shots for the final 48 holes and eliminated most of the suspense by opening the tournament with back-to-back 65s, the lowest two-round score in Open history.
It’s the second major title for Kaymer, who claimed the PGA Championship in 2010.
Compton was the only player with a chance to overtake Kaymer in the final round until consecutive bogeys on the back nine. He closed with a 2-over 72 for a 1-under total.
Fowler also finished with a 72 that left him the only other player under par. Keegan Bradley, Jason Day and Dustin Johnson finished 1-over, as did Brooks Koepka and Henrik Stenson.

Johnson wins at Michigan
BROOKLYN, Mich. (AP) β Jimmie Johnson’s winless days at Michigan International Speedway are finally over.
The six-time series champion has won for the first time in 25 Sprint Cup starts at MIS, outlasting pole winner Kevin Harvick by just over a second. It was Johnson’s third victory in four races.
Brad Keselowski finished third after two straight runner-up showings at Dover and Pocono. Paul Menard (meh-NARD’) was fourth, followed by Kasey Kahne (KAYN), Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt, Jr.

Royals keep rolling
UNDATED (AP) β James Shields and the Kansas City Royals continued their winning streaks.
Salvador Perez belted a three-run homer and the Royals earned their seventh straight win by beating the White Sox 6-2 in Chicago. Eric Hosmer added a two-run homer to back Shields, who’s 8-3 after winning his fifth straight decision.
Shields was shaky over six innings, surrendering 10 hits but only three runs. He hasn’t lost in eight starts since May 2, thanks in part to the Royals’ 42 runs in those games.
The Royals’ winning streak keeps them within 1 Β½ games of Detroit for the American League Central lead.
The Tigers picked up their second straight win since a 7-17 stretch. J.D. Martinez’s ninth-inning sacrifice fly scored Torii Hunter with the winning run and Detroit beat Minnesota 4-3. The winning run was set up when Victor Martinez hit a fly ball to the right-field wall, and Oswaldo Arcia dropped it for an error.

β Derek Norris and Coco Crisp hit early three-run homers and Oakland easily won the rubber match of their three-game series by clobbering the New York Yankees 10-5. Jesse Chavez allowed a run and five hits in six innings for his sixth win
β Toronto beat Baltimore 5-2 as J.A. Happ limited the Orioles to a run and seven hits in six-plus innings. Dioner Navarro had three hits and two RBIs in the Blue Jays’ third victory in nine games.
β David Price surrendered a pair of first-inning homers but struck out 10 over eight innings of Tampa Bay’s 4-3 verdict over Houston. Jerry Sands singled home the tiebreaking run in eighth after Yunel (yoo-NEHL’) Escobar collected two RBIs.
β Nick Swisher’s 11th-inning homer gave Cleveland a 3-2 victory and a split of its four-game series in Boston. Michael Brantley also went deep for the Indians, who trailed 2-1 before Yan Gomes (yahn gohmz) lifted a sacrifice fly in the seventh.
β Seattle’s five-game skid is over after Kyle Seager had four hits and three RBIs in the Mariners’ 5-1 triumph against Texas. Hisashi Iwakuma (hih-SAH’-shee ee-wah-KOO’-muh) gave up a run and six hits in eight innings for the win.
β Matt Adams homered for the third straight game since coming off the disabled list and Matt Holliday added a round-tripper as St. Louis beat Washington 5-2 to complete a three-game sweep. Jaime Garcia allowed a run and five hits in seven innings to outduel Doug Fister, who had won his previous five starts.
β Tommy La Stella hit a go-ahead, two-run double in the sixth inning as Atlanta rallied to beat the Angels 7-3. Jason Heyward hit a solo homer for the Braves, who trailed 3-0 heading into the sixth.
β Casey McGehee (mih-GEE’) had the big at-bats in Miami’s 3-2 win over Pittsburgh, tying the game with a two-out, two-run double in the eighth before hitting a game-ending sacrifice fly in the 10th. The Pirates had won four in a row and were bidding for their first three-game series sweep in Miami since 1993.
β Colorado torched San Francisco’s bullpen for the third straight day, scoring four times in the eighth to beat the Giants 8-7 and complete a three-game sweep. Drew Stubbs began the rally with an RBI triple and scored on Mike McKenry’s single before pinch-hitter Justin Morneau lined a go-ahead, two-run double off Javier Lopez to send the Rockies to their fifth straight win.
β Home runs by Paul Goldschmidt and Miguel Montero powered Arizona past the Dodgers 6-3 in Los Angeles. Bronson Arroyo helped the Diamondbacks avoid a three-game sweep, allowing a run and five hits in five innings to win his third straight start.
β Billy Hamilton hit a leadoff homer before Brandon Phillips added a two-run blast later in the first inning of Cincinnati’s 13-4 rout of Milwaukee. Todd Frazier added his team-high 15th homer and drove in four runs, while Ryan Ludwick had three doubles and got four of the Reds’ season-high 19 hits.
β Curtis Granderson hit a lead-off home run off and Bobby Abreu added an RBI double in the first inning of the Mets’ 3-1 win against San Diego in New York. The Mets’ bullpen worked eight stellar innings after Daisuke Matsuzaka (DYS’-kay mat-soo-ZAH’-kah) was lifted due to a severe upset stomach.
β Travis Wood allowed just three hits over eight innings to pitch the Cubs past Philadelphia 3-0. Wood got the only run he needed in the first inning when Anthony Rizzo hit a home run off of Phillies starter A.J. Burnett.

France wins opener
UNDATED (AP) β Karim Benzema scored twice as France opened World Cup play with a 3-0 win over Honduras. The French went winless in the 2010 World Cup.

β Lionel Messi scored in the 65th minute to give Argentina a 2-0 lead in a 2-1 victory over Bosnia.
β A goal deep in stoppage-time sent Switzerland to a dramatic 2-1 victory over Ecuador in their Group E opener.

Cup protest go one
RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) β Police fired stun grenades and tear gas to halt a march by about 200 protesters toward Rio de Janeiro’s Maracana stadium ahead of the World Cup match between Argentina and Bosnia.
A standoff ensued, with banner-brandishing demonstrators massing near a police line blocking the route to Maracana.
The protesters chanted “FIFA, go back to Switzerland,” referring to international soccer’s governing organization. The protesters are angry over the lavish public spending on stadiums for the World Cup while conditions in Brazil’s schools and hospitals remain woeful.

Horned Frogs, Cavaliers win late
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) β Boomer White singled home the go-ahead run in the eighth inning to give TCU a 3-2 win over Big 12 rival Texas Tech in the College World Series. The Horned Frogs trailed 2-1 before scoring twice in the eighth.
Virginia also reached the winner’s bracket as the Cavaliers beat Mississippi 2-1 on Mike Papi’s RBI double with two out in the bottom of the ninth. Virginia hurlers Nathan Kirby and Artie Lewicki combined for the first one-hitter at the CWS since 1983.

UNDATED (AP) β Roger Federer tuned up for Wimbledon by beating Alejandro Falla 7-6, 7-6 to win the Gerry Weber Open. It’s the seventh time the Swiss star has claimed the title in the German grass court tournament.

HORSE RACING-NAPRAVNIK INJURED
Jockey out 4-6 weeks after spill
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) β Churchill Downs says that jockey Rosie Napravnik will miss four to six weeks after separating her left shoulder in a Sunday morning practice spill at the home of the Kentucky Derby.
The 26-year old Napravnik will not require surgery after sustaining a mild separation in an accident aboard Socialbug.
The Bob Baffert-trained Socialbug was euthanized.
