INDIAN TRAIL, N.C. — A rescue at a suspected cockfighting ring in South Carolina has caused an overload at a local bird shelter.
Carolina Waterfowl Rescue takes in injured ducks, geese, swans and even turkeys.
The rescue says it needs lots of volunteers and adoptive families. The group’s director is side-lined with medical issues and part of the shelter was damaged in recent storms.
Nancy Riggsbee, Carolina Waterfowl Rescue, says ” So it’s just a lot of those factors that we don’t normally happen to us all at once it just kinda converged on us. So we find ourselves in need of the public’s help.”
Organizers are looking for people who have private ponds or lakes. They’d like to release wild ducks and geese that are fully recovered.
Until July 15th, all adoption fees will be waived for approved adopters who can take a rooster with two hens or male pekin ducks. A reduced adoption fee will be offered for other domestic ducks and geese.
Volunteers are also needed to help on a special volunteer work day that is set for Saturday, June 21st from 10am-2pm. To sign up for the Saturday work day email volunteer@cwrescue.org.
