CHARLOTTE, NC — The budget battle ended Tuesday night in Charlotte. After a lot of last-minute arguing, Commissioners approved Mecklenburg’s $1.5 billion budget.
The plan includes a delayed two percent raise for some CMS teachers. The budget does not call for a property tax hike. It does include a two percent increase in water, sewer and storm water fees.
Commissioners are also discussing adding a quarter-cent county sales tax for teacher pay on the ballot in November.
“If they were going to lower the take one percent, one penny from anything, why not give it all to the teachers then, or why not suggest that last week?” asked Erline Lyde of West Charlotte High School.
Commissioners decided to hold $7.2 million for CMS teacher raises until the state announces how much it will earmark for teachers.
