The big buzz online today was the tweet from Delta Airlines. Some people saw it, at best, as a horribly stupid and ill-informed mistake… and at worst, as an obliviously obtuse racist remark.
The furor was unleashed after some unknown PR person handling Delta Airlines’ Twitter account tried to show a little American pride during our awesome win over Ghana. And this is how they did it: by using the Statue of Liberty to represent America… and a giraffe to represent the African country of Ghana. Only problem: Ghana doesn’t have giraffes. It’d be like showing a polar bear to represent the Carolinas.
Which would be obviously wrong, possibly ignorant… but racist? After the offended masses started tweeting, plenty of other people started to push back, saying it was simply a mistake, no offense intended. Which made our Man on the Edge, Robert Wilder, wonder what the people of Charlotte see in the tweet…
