CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A suspect accused of shooting at an officer earlier this week was shot and killed by police at a northeast Charlotte motel.

Investigators say someone called 911 saying they had seen Devaron Wilburn.  He was wanted for firing at an officer late Monday night on West Trade Street.

Police swarmed the Intown Suites on North Tryon Street near University City Boulevard and immediately began moving nearby residents to a safe location.

Officers called the room and spoke to a woman who was in the room with the suspect.  She voluntarily left the room.

Officers then attempted to convince Wilburn to surrender but he allegedly refused.  Wilburn is then accused of pointing a weapon at officers.

Officer David Michaud shot the suspect once in the abdomen.  He was rushed to the hospital but died a short time later.

Police located the firearm that was allegedly pointed at officers.  As standard procedure, the Internal Affairs Bureau will conduct a separate but parallel investigation to determine whether or not CMPD policies and procedures were adhered to during the course of the incident.

Officer Michaud has been place on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.  He was been a member of the police department since September 1994.
