CLEVELAND (AP) — A person who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity says the Cleveland Cavaliers have offered the head coaching job to European coach David Blatt following a five-week search to find a replacement for Mike Brown. The 55-year-old Blatt recently resigned as coach of Maccabi Tel Aviv to pursue his dream of coaching in the NBA. He was coveted as an assistant by Minnesota and Golden State.

UNDATED (AP) — Kansas City’s 10-game winning streak is over after Anibal (AH’-nih-bahl) Sanchez held the Royals to a run and five hits in seven innings of Detroit’s 2-1 victory. Miguel Cabrera had an RBI double and J.D. Martinez homered in the fourth inning as the Tigers won for only the sixth time in their last 18 games. Also in the American League, Cleveland beat the Angels 5-3 on Nick Swisher’s grand slam with two out in the bottom of the 10th.

UNDATED (AP) — Uruguay and Colombia earned 2-1 victories at the World Cup on Thursday. Luis Suarez scored twice in Uruguay’s win over England, and Colombia notched a pair of goals during a six-minute stretch of the second half to beat Ivory Coast. And Japan played to a scoreless tie against Greece, putting Colombia in the knockout round.

SAO PAULO (AP) — U.S. forward Jozy Altidore (JOH’-zee AL’-tih-door) will miss Sunday’s World Cup game against Portugal because of his strained left hamstring. He was hurt in the first half of Monday’s win over Ghana. A U.S. team spokesman did not reveal the severity of the strain but says the Americans are hopeful Altidore can return at some point during the tournament.

PINEHURST, N.C. (AP) — Top-ranked Stacy Lewis is the leader through one round of the U.S. Women’s Open at Pinehurst. Lewis opened with a 3-under 67 for a one-shot edge over Michelle Wie (wee). Katherine Kirk, Minjee Lee and So Yeon Ryu is two shots back.
