Man on the Edge: What Would You Buy, No Matter the Price?

Oh, the magical power of bacon!  Even people who don’t eat a lot of meat have to admit that there’s something special about it.  Bacon is like the candy of the meat family.  But it’s priced more like caviar than candy.

The price of bacon is ridiculous these days; we’re talking all-time highs at about $4 per pound!  That’s partially thanks to a virus sweeping pig farms.  But current prices represent a 40 percent hike over the past decade.  Still, we’re eating more bacon than ever, and sales are up about 10 percent.  Which makes it seem like we’re willing to pay any price to keep eating our precious bacon.

But it’s not like bacon is a necessity like gasoline or electricity or medicine.  These are things that you simply can’t live without in the modern world.  And the government has oversight measures in place to tweak the effects of supply and demand on those things.

Of course, there are other things we prove through purchase that we’re willing to cough up extra cash for, like entertainment.  Movie and cable prices seem to go up every month or two, but there’s certainly no shortage there, and you might complain about the cost of a Starbucks, but they still have a store on every corner, so somebody is buying it.

Which leads our Man on the Edge, Robert Wilder, to present the Question of the Night: what one thing are you willing to buy, no matter what the cost?
