Man Charged After Hitting And Killing Bicyclist In Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Jonathan Shaver, 39, was charged with Involuntary Manslaughter, Felony Hit and Run, Driving While Impaired, Registration and Insurance Violations after hitting and killing a bicyclist.

The accident happened Sunday just before midnight on South Tryon Street. Shaver was driving his 1996 Jeep Cherokee when he hit 46-year-old Vung Vu on a bike.

Shaver and Vu were driving in the same direction. Vu flew into the windshield of the Jeep before he was thrown to the ground. Medic pronounced Vu dead at the scene.

Shaver did not stop after the crash. He drove to his home in Clover, South Carolina before calling 911 to report the crash and his involvement.

Police say that speed does not appear to be a factor. The bicyclist is suspected to be under the influence of alcohol.

CMPD is investigating the crash. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600 or Detective Steve Williams at 704-336-8862.
