INDIAN TRAIL, NC – Uproar in Indian Trail after the town council approved a controversial apartment complex.
During the public comment allotted time at Tuesday night’s town council meeting, more than a dozen residents told council members why the town and schools can’t support more people.
“Overcrowded schools, redistricting, poor infrastructure, increased traffic, higher taxes,” said Jerry Morris, an Indian Trail resident.
Despite the outcry, the council voted 3-2 to approve a 348-unit apartment complex at the corner of Plyler Road and Unionville Indian Trail Road.
“We’re in dire straights here, and nobody seems to want to do anything about it,” said Jan Barley.
Many residents say council members Gordon Daniels and Gary Savoie should have recused themselves from the vote.
Campaign records show both council members accepted a combined $3,500 dollars from employees of the developer, Bonterra Builders.
“Whatever the developers want, they’re gung-ho and forget about everybody in the town,” said Samantha Towns.
Campaign finances aren’t the residents’ only concerns. Some say roads are already congested, and there are not enough deputies and firefighters in the town. They also say schools are already overcrowded, which was part of the redistricting fight in Union County this year.
“Well we’ll just move y’all over and make room for the new people, we appreciate everything you’ve done for the schools but move along, time for the new people to come in,” said Barley.
