Team USA goes down in OT

SALVADOR, Brazil (AP)— Close, gallant — but out.

The United States was eliminated by Belgium 2-1 in overtime in the second round of the World Cup, puncturing the soccer bubble that Americans had enjoyed for a couple of weeks.

Following a scoreless 90 minutes of regulation, Belgium scored two quick goals at the start of the 30-minute overtime. Julian Green got one back for the U.S. in the 107th minute of the match. Despite putting on late pressure, the U.S. failed to score the equalizer.

U.S. goalie Tim Howard was the reason the Americans even reached overtime, making several tough saves during the scoreless regulation.

The U.S. was trying to advance to the quarterfinals for the first time since 2002.

Belgium next plays Argentina, which beat Switzerland 1-0 in extra time. The lone goal was scored in the 118th minute.

WIMBLEDON-DAY 8

Results from London

LONDON (AP) — There was a shocker at Wimbledon in men’s play as two-time champion Rafael Nadal (rah-fay-ehl nah-DAHL’) lost in the fourth round to 19-year-old Nick Kyrgios (KIR’-ee-ohs) of Australia 7-6, 5-7, 7-6, 6-3. The 144th-ranked Kyrgios, a wild-card entry, hit 37 aces and delivered a between-the-legs winner on one point. He is the first man to get to the quarterfinals in his Wimbledon debut in 10 years.

He’s also the first player ranked outside the top 100 to beat the World No. 1 man since 1992.

The second-seeded Nadal has appeared in five finals at the All England Club. But he lost in the second round in 2012 and the first round in 2013.

In another surprising development, former Wimbledon singles and doubles champion Serena Williams was unable to compete with her sister Venus in their doubles match. Serena Williams looked out of sorts, unable to catch the ball when it was tossed to her and at times unable to serve. Wimbledon officials said after the match that Williams was suffering from a virus.

The sisters pulled out of the match after only three games. Serena, who lost in singles Saturday, was looked at by members of the medical staff who checked her blood pressure before the doubles match even began. At love-40, the umpire took the unusual step of climbing down from the chair and walking over to speak to Serena. She then served another double-fault to trail 3-0.

And French Open champion and fifth seed Maria Sharapova (shah-rah-POH’-vah) has been ousted. She lost in three sets to ninth seed Angelique Kerber of Germany 7-6, 4-6, 6-4. Sharapova, a five-time major champion, had lost only seven games in her three previous matches at the All England Club this year. Kerber reached the semifinals at Wimbledon in 2012.

In other results, French Open runner-up Simona Halep (HAL’-ehp) breezed into the quarterfinals with a straight sets win over an unseeded player. Halep, who has reached the quarterfinals at all three Grand Slams this year, is the only player among the top four seeds left in the draw.

She will face Sabine Lisicki next as the 2013 finalist, who overcame shoulder trouble, advanced with a three-set win over another unseeded player. The 19th-seeded Lisicki took an injury timeout while facing break point at 1-1 in the second set and was treated by a trainer on her right shoulder.

Seven-time champion Roger Federer returned to the quarterfinals with a clinical 6-1, 6-4, 6-4 victory over Tommy Robredo (roh-BRAY’-doh) of Spain. The fourth-seeded Federer looked in complete control and saved the only break point he faced in the final game of the match with a forehand volley. He has yet to lose a set at the All England Club this year. And fifth-seed Stan Wawrinka (vah-VRINK’-ah) has advanced with a straight sets win over 19th-seed Feliciano Lopez. He will face Federer in the next round of play.

Blue Jays win Canada Day contest in Toronto

UNDATED (AP) — There is a matinee game played in Toronto this afternoon as the Blue Jays beat the Brewers 4-1 in a game featuring two divisional leaders. Jose Bautista and Colby Rasmus hit solo home runs. Drew Hutchison struck out a career-high 10 to even his record at 6-6.

The Jays now top the Orioles by a game and a-half in the American League East while the Brewers’ lead over the Cardinals is now six games in the National League Central. This is the first of a two-game set between the two clubs.

The Tigers and Athletics, two divisional leaders in the AL, continue their series in Detroit tonight. The Tigers shocked the A’s last night as Rajai (RAH’-zhay) Davis hit a grand slam in the bottom of the ninth to win 5-4. Former big leaguer lands an appeal

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A federal appeals court says it will reconsider Barry Bonds’ felony conviction for obstruction of justice. The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that a special panel of 11 judges will review a 2011 jury verdict finding Major League Baseball’s all-time homerun leader guilty of giving evasive testimony to a grand jury investigating elite athletes’ use of performance-enhancing drugs.

A three-judge panel of the 9th Circuit last year upheld the conviction, which stems from a rambling answer Bonds gave in response to a question about whether he received injections from anyone other than his doctor. The court has not set a date for a new hearing.

Irving agrees on deal with Cavs

CLEVELAND (AP) — As the free agency period hits the NBA one club has made a splash by coming to terms with one of its key players. Cleveland owner Dan Gilbert has tweeted that the Cavs and guard Kyrie (ky-REE’) Irving have agreed to terms on a five-year contract extension. Neither side announced the terms, but several outlets reported that it is a maximum deal worth about $90 million.

NBA rules dictate the contract can’t be officially signed until July 10.

Kidd heads to Milwaukee

MILWAUKEE (AP) — As expected, the Milwaukee Bucks have hired Jason Kidd as coach after completing a deal with the Brooklyn Nets for his rights. The Bucks sent the Nets two second-round picks for Kidd, who went 44-38 in his only season as Brooklyn coach.

To make room for Kidd the Bucks fired Larry Drew yesterday after reaching the deal for Kidd. Drew went 15-67, the worst record in the league, in his only season guiding the Bucks.

Teams start off season maneuvering

UNDATED (AP) — NHL free agency has opened with a flurry of moves.

Defenseman Matt Niskanen cashed in on his free agency, signing a seven-year, $40.25 million contract with the Washington Capitals.

The Capitals, trying to support superstar Alex Ovechkin (oh-VECH’-kin) with more talent, also signed defenseman Brooks Orpik to a $27.5 million, five-year deal.

Colorado veteran Paul Stastny (STAS’-nee) got a $28 million, four-year contract from the St. Louis Blues.

Thomas Vanek and Ryan Miller were also on the move hours after the market opened Tuesday. The Minnesota Wild signed Vanek, a forward, to a $19.5 million, three-year deal. The Vancouver Canucks gave Miller a three-year deal worth $18 million.

The Pittsburgh Penguins addressed a significant need on their blue line by signing veteran defenseman Christian Ehrhoff (AYR’-hahf) to a one-year, $4 million contract. Ehrhoff became a free agent on Sunday after the Buffalo Sabres bought out the final seven seasons of the player’s 10-year contract.

The Chicago Blackhawks have signed Brad Richards to a one-year deal, bolstering their group of centers with another proven scorer. Richards had 20 goals and 31 assists in 82 games for the New York Rangers last season, and then had 12 points in the playoffs to help his team make it to the Stanley Cup finals.

More than 10 teams, including the Buffalo Sabres, handed out contracts worth more than $4 million a season on Day 1 of free agency.
