NEWTON, NC – The murder of a high school counselor in Newton remains a mystery. It’s been three days since a friend found 31-year-old Maggie Daniels dead in her home, but police still won’t say how she died.

“We discussed our strategies, where we’re going to go from here. That’s basically it, it’s a round table conversation between all of us,” said Newton Police Chief Donald Brown II.

That’s all Newton Police would tell WCCB after a meeting with investigators and agents from the State Bureau of Investigation Tuesday.

There are still lots of questions about the death of Maggie Daniels, the former Teacher of the Year and basketball coach at Newton-Conover High School.

Daniel’s former students have nothing but good things to say about her.

“The smiles on her face that she had just kept everyone’s energy level up,” said Tevin James.

“She was just there for us whenever we needed it, she helped us with everything we needed, she was just a good person,” said Tyler Black.

Daniels recently moved to Discovery High School to become a counselor.

Neighbors tell WCCB, Daniels was an avid runner and was often seen jogging around Newton.
Police say a friend found her body Saturday morning in her home at the Windsor Apartments off West 17th Street.

After autopsy results were released Monday, Newton Police changed the status of the case from a death investigation to a homicide.

Police tell WCCB they’re still canvassing the apartment complex. They’re also talking to people in the area, Daniel’s friends and anyone who knew her.

“It has to be somebody crazy like a stalker,” said DeVante Jones.
