A’s outlast Jays…Sale silences M’s
UNDATED (AP) β The Oakland Athletics have rebounded quite nicely since being swept in a three-game series at Detroit earlier this week.
Nick Punto hit a walkoff double in the 12th inning to give the Athletics a 1-0 victory against Toronto. The Athletics managed just four hits before Punto’s two-bagger allowed them to beat the Blue Jays for the second straight day.
A’s starter Tommy Milone gave up four hits in six innings.
Oakland still leads the AL West by 3 Β½ games over the Los Angeles Angels.
The Angels kept pace by beating Houston 7-6 on Mike Trout’s walkoff homer in the ninth. Albert Pujols (POO’-hohlz) belted a two-run homer among his three hits, and Howie Kendrick was 4-for-4 with an RBI in the Angels’ 11th victory in 14 games.
Elsewhere in the majors:
β Chris Sale is 8-1 with a 2.16 ERA after firing a six-hitter with 12 strikeouts in the Chicago White Sox’s 7-0 rout of Seattle, ending the Mariners’ four-game winning streak. Jose Abreu (ah-BRAY’-oo) belted his major league-leading 27th home runs after Dayan Viciedo (dy-AHN’ vih-see-EH’-doh) and Paul Konerko went deep.
β Brian Roberts was the hitting star in the Yankees’ 6-5 win over the Twins, going 4-for-5 with three doubles and a triple, one RBI and two runs scored. Jacoby Ellsbury added a two-run single and Francisco Cervelli (sur-VEHL’-ee) had three of the Yankees’ 10 hits.
β Ben Zobrist (ZOH’-brihst) and Sean Rodriguez each had two RBIs as Tampa Bay doubled up Detroit 6-3. Evan Longoria added a solo homer and Desmond Jennings went 3-for-5 with three runs scored to help the Rays win for the eighth time in 10 games.
β Kansas City was a 7-1 winner at Cleveland as Mike Moustakas (moos-TAH’-kahs) went 2-for-4 with a three-run homer and two runs scored. Christian Colon laced a triple and a pair of doubles while scoring three times to support Yordano Ventura, who allowed a run and six hits over 8 1/3 innings.
β Milwaukee suffered its fourth consecutive loss as Alfredo Simon improved to 11-3 by allowing two runs over 7 1/3 innings of Cincinnati’s 4-2 triumph over the Brewers. Billy Hamilton smacked a two-run homer and Skip Schumaker had three hits and an RBI.
β Lance Lynn gave up five hits in 6 2/3 shutout innings as St. Louis blanked Miami 3-0. The Cardinals did their scoring in the sixth inning on a wild pitch and RBI doubles by Yadier Molina (YAH’-dee-ehr moh-LEE’-nuh) and Oscar Taveras.
β Pittsburgh’s Jordy Mercer delivered a two-run double and a two-run single in an 8-2 rout of Philadelphia. Andrew McCutchen had four hits and two RBIs in the Pirates’ fourth victory in five games.
β The Braves own an eight-game winning streak after Freddie Freeman hit a pair of RBI singles and Ervin Santana pitched into the eighth inning of Atlanta’s 5-2 victory against Arizona. The Braves now lead the NL East by 1 Β½ games over Washington.
β Justin Ruggiano homered for the second straight game while providing three hits and two RBIs in the Cubs’ 7-2 win over the Nationals in Washington. Ruggiano has six hits and seven RBIs in his last two games, helping Chicago stretch its winning streak to four games.
β Eric Stults scattered four hits in seven innings of San Diego’s fifth straight win, 2-0 against San Francisco. Alexi Amarista smacked a solo homer and Chase Headley had four of the Padres’ eight hits, including an RBI single.
β Clayton Kershaw improved to 10-2 with a 1.85 ERA by holding the Rockies to two hits with eight strikeouts in eight innings of the Dodgers’ 9-0 shutout in Colorado. Yasiel Puig (YAH’-see-ul pweeg) hit a two-run homer and Scott Van Slyke added a three-run blast as Los Angeles stretched its lead in the NL West to 1 Β½ games over the Giants.
β Lucas Duda hit a two-run homer and Travis d’Arnaud delivered a tiebreaking, two-run double in the eighth inning of the New York Mets’ 6-5 victory against Texas. The Mets stopped a four-game skid and dealt the Rangers their sixth straight loss.
β Baltimore’s game at Boston was postponed due to weather. Those clubs will play two on Saturday.

Sabathia update
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) β Yankees manager Joe Girardi says it’s “about fair to say” that pitcher CC Sabathia’s (suh-BATH’-ee-uhz) season is over.
The six-time All-Star left-hander has been out with a degenerative cartilage problem in his right knee. After making his second rehab start Wednesday, Sabathia experienced swelling the next morning.
The 33-year-old is in his sixth season with the Yankees, and his ERA reached 5.28 in mid-May when he was placed on the disabled list.
WIMBLEDON-MEN
Men’s final set
LONDON (AP) β It will be top-seeded Novak Djokovic (NOH’-vak JOH’-kuh-vich) and fourth-seeded Roger Federer in the men’s final at Wimbledon. Djokovic beat 11th-seed Grigor Dimitrov (GREE’-gohr DIHM’-ih-trov) 6-4, 3-6, 7-6, 7-6, while Federer had an easier time with Milos Raonic (ROW’-nihch) of Canada, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4.
The women’s final is set for this morning with Canada’s Eugenie Bouchard (boo-SHARD’) taking on Petra Kvitova (kuh-VIHT’-oh-vuh).
NASCAR-DAYTONA QUALIFYING
Gilliland grabs pole
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) β David Gilliland has won the pole for Saturday’s Sprint Cup race at Daytona after rain shortened qualifying.
Gilliland’s top speed was 199.322 mph. The top 24 drivers in the first knockout stage were supposed to advance to the next round, but rain prompted NASCAR to cancel the final two sessions.
Reed Sorenson qualified second, followed by Landon Cassill, Bobby Labonte (lah-BAHN’-tee) and Jimmie Johnson.
WORLD CUP
Brazil, Germany win
RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) β Soccer powers Brazil and Germany are through to the semifinals at the World Cup and will meet in the next round on Tuesday.
The host Brazilians hung on to edge Columbia 2-1 to make it to the semifinals for the first time in 12 years. Defenders Thiago (tee-AH’-goh) Silva and David Luiz scored to put Brazil ahead 2-0.
But the victory came at a huge price. Brazil’s team doctor says Neymar will miss the rest of the World Cup after breaking a vertebra during the game. Neymar was kneed in the back and was in tears when he was carried off the field on a stretcher.
Neymar had four goals in the tournament.
Mats Hummels scored on a header in the 13th minute to give Germany a 1-0 triumph over France, putting the Germans in the semifinals for a fourth straight World Cup.
PGA-GREENBRIER CLASSIC
Hurley tops leaderboard
WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. (AP) β Billy Hurley III fired a 7-under 63 to take a one-stroke lead after the second round of the PGA’s Greenbrier Classic.
Hurley played bogey-free in shooting his lowest score of the season. The former U.S. Navy officer is at 9-under 131, a stroke ahead of Kevin Chappell and Chris Stroud.
NBA-HAWKS-SEFOLOSHA
Hawks land Sefolosha
ATLANTA (AP) β A person with knowledge of the deal has told the Associated Press the Atlanta Hawks have reached an agreement with forward Thabo Sefolosha (TAH’-boh she-fah-LOH’-shah) on a three-year, $12 million deal. The contract leaves the team sufficient salary cap room for additional offseason moves.
The 6-foot-7 Sefolosha averaged 6.3 points as a starter in 61 games last season for Oklahoma City.
NBA-PORTLAND
Kaman’s deal
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) β Free agent center Chris Kaman (KAY’-man) has agreed to a two-year deal with the Portland Trail Blazers. The deal, worth a reported $9.8 million, was first reported Thursday night by Yahoo! Sports, and confirmed by The Associated Press on Friday.
The 7-foot center has averaged 11.7 points, 7.9 rebounds and 1.4 blocks over an 11-year NBA career.
NBA-GINOBILI
Ginobili hurt
SAN ANTONIO (AP) β The San Antonio Spurs say Manu Ginobili (MAN’-oo jih-NOH’-blee) has a stress fracture of the lower fibula of his right leg.
The injury could knock the key reserve for the NBA champion Spurs out of the upcoming World Cup of Basketball, where he was scheduled to play for Argentina. Ginobili wrote Tuesday on his Facebook page that his availability will depend on how he feels in about three weeks, but that he remains optimistic.
NHL-SENATORS-LEGWAND
Legwand lands in Ottawa
OTTAWA (AP) β Ottawa has signed center David Legwand to a two-year, $6 million contract. He had 51 points in 83 games last season with Detroit and Nashville.
TENNESSEE-SUMMITT
New deal for Summitt
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) β Pat Summitt will remain the Tennessee women’s basketball head coach emeritus next season and can continue holding the position as long as she wants it. That’s according to a new contract signed in May and obtained Thursday night through a public records request. It states that Summitt will have the title head coach emeritus “in perpetuity, or until she chooses to relinquish it.”
Summitt has served as head coach emeritus since ending her 38-season tenure as the Lady Vols’ coach in April 2012. That came one year after announcing she had early-onset dementia, Alzheimer’s type.
