CINCINNATI (AP) β Alfredo Simon (SY’-muhn) is the NL’s first 12-game winner after Billy Hamilton hit a tiebreaking triple in the Cincinnati Reds’ 4-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs. The Reds won their fifth in a row β matching their season high β and moved a season-best seven games over .500.
SAO PAULO (AP) β For the third time, it will be Argentina-Germany in a World Cup final after the Argentines advanced to Sunday’s championship with a semifinal victory over the Netherlands in a match decided by a 4-2 advantage in penalty kicks. Argentina beat Germany in the 1986 World Cup final and Germany returned the favor in 1990.
EDMOND, Okla. (AP) β Bernard Langer (LAHN’-gur) is the man to beat at the U.S. Senior Open at Oak Tree National starting today in Oklahoma. The 56-year-old Langer has three victories, three runner-up finishes and 11 top 10s in 12 Senior Tour events this year.
