CHARLOTTE, NC – Rashad Porter’s mother and other family members gathered at the place where police say the 27-year-old was gunned down early Sunday morning. They left flowers and a small memorial along Major Street, where police say the shooting happened around 4am.
Neighbors say there was an unusual amount of cars and activity along the road in the hours before the gunfire.
“Bunch of cars lined up along this street. Going on around the corner. You know, we didn’t know what was going on,” one neighbor said.
So far, police have not made an arrest and have not identified a suspect. But the neighor says he called police before the shooting, and says they didn’t respond until it was too late.
“We got here an hour before, an hour before all the gunshots even took place. We got home and we seen all this stuff going on. And we called, but no one ever showed up,” he says.
Others say they’ve seen fights and other issues in the neighborhood off Freedom Drive and I-85, but nothing like this.
“And I just seen cars after cars, mega traffic, I mean, more traffic than I’ve seen in 14 years I’ve been here,” another neighbor says.
She says it seemed like a block party was going on down the street and thought she heard firecrackers at first.
“I feel real bad about that, because I probably actually heard the gunshots that killed the person. And so I just feel terrible,” she says.
The victim, Rashad Porter, does have an arrest record in Mecklenburg County from back in 2011 and 2012. He was listed as a Federal Inmate.
