RALEIGH, NC — A bill that would cap the state sales taxes is delayed in the North Carolina senate until at least next week. The proposal would require all counties to keep the current 2.5 cent sales tax. If it passes, a property tax referendum on Mecklenburg County’s November ballot will be null and void. That referendum would raise the county’s sales tax by a quarter-penny to fund teacher pay raises.
“It takes away from the people the ability to decide what to do with their own money. If a Mecklenburg citizen wants to invest in teacher pay raises by paying a higher sales tax, they should be able to do so,” said County Commission Chair Trevor Fuller (D).
Republicans say they hope to begin debates on the sales tax cap bill on Monday.
