SAN DIEGO (AP) β Rookie Odrisamer Despaigne (dehs-PAHN’-yay) of the San Diego Padres lost a no-hit bid with two outs in the eighth inning when Daniel Murphy of the New York Mets doubled before the Padres rallied for a 2-1 victory. OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) β The Oakland Athletics improved baseball’s best record to 61-37 with a 10-2 rout of the AL East-leading Baltimore Orioles. The A’s remain a game and a-half ahead of the L.A. Angels, who posted their major league-leading 30th come-from-behind victory with a 6-5 win over the Seattle Mariners.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) β It might be a little late, but the Tampa Bay Rays are moving up in the AL East race. James Loney had two hits and two RBIs, and Chris Archer won consecutive decisions for the first time this season as Tampa Bay topped Minnesota 5-3 for its fifth straight win to move within three games of AL East-leading Baltimore.
HOYLAKE, England (AP)β Rory McIlroy went wire-to-wire in capturing his first British Open with a final-round 71 for a 17-under 271 finish, two shots ahead of Sergio Garcia and Rickie Fowler. The 25-year-old McIlroy picked up the third leg of a career Grand Slam. If he wins the Masters next year, he would become just the sixth player to win all four of golf’s majors.
