DENVER (AP) β€” The Washington Nationals moved into first place in the NL East by beating Colorado 7-2, handing the Rockies their 24th loss in their last 28 games. Ian Desmond went 5-for-5 and cracked his 17th homer, a two-run shot in the fourth innings, to help Doug Fister win his ninth game.

ATLANTA (AP) β€” The Atlanta Braves fell a game back of Washington in the NL East by losing 3-1 to Miami in 10 innings. Garrett Jones drove in two runs with a bases-loaded single in the 10th inning

TORONTO (AP) β€” Red Sox slugger David Ortiz has passed Boston great Carl Yastrzemski (yah-STREM’-skee) into 36th place on baseball’s career home run chart. Ortiz has 22 homers this year, including a pair in the Red Sox’ 14-1 rout of Toronto.

NEW YORK (AP)β€” The New York Yankees will be without star first baseman Mark Teixeira (teh-SHEHR’-uh) for at least three games because of a strained muscle in his back. Teixeira has been hampered by a left lower lat injury that was causing spasms in his back for about a month, and the pain escalated over the weekend.

CLEVELAND (AP) β€” Johnny Manziel (man-ZEHL’) is No. 2 on the Cleveland Browns quarterback depth chart, but he’s No. 1 with fans. The popular rookie quarterback has had the league’s top-selling jersey since April 1, ahead of such established stars as Super Bowl-winning quarterback Russell Wilson of Seattle, Colin Kaepernick (KAH’-lihn KAP-ur-nihk) of the 49ers and Denver’s Peyton Manning.
