GASTONIA, N.C. — Tony Lewis, 19, died after crashing a 1997 Honda Accord in front of Rhyne Elementary School just before 2:30 a.m. Saturday.
Police responded to Davidson Ave near Cloverdale Circle where the fire department and EMS extricated Lewis from the car.
Lewis was taken to Caromount Regional Medical Center where he died from his injuries.
Investigators say it appears that speed was a contributing factor in the crash. The Accord veered off the roadway, hit two trees and overturned in front of the school. Lewis was not wearing a seat belt.
