GASTON COUNTY, NC — The nephew of a former wrestling coach charged with sex crimes says one of the accusers wanted his uncle’s job. Gary “Scott” Goins faces nearly two-dozen sex charges involving students at East Gaston High School.
Tyler Goins testified in his uncle’s defense today, saying one of the accusers was upset about being let go as an assistant coach. Tyler testified that the accuser often talked about wanting to eventually take over the program.
“He’s always wanted to be the head coach at East Gaston,” said Goins. The defense attorney asked, “He’s actually said that?” “Oh yeah.. oh yeah,” replied Goins.
A former wrestler testified Goins fired the accuser as an assistant coach because he wasn’t showing up to practices. Three former wrestlers say Scott Goins touched them inappropriately and forced them to perform sex acts. He denies the accusations.
