CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police say a Charlotte mother was arrested after she helped her son participate in a challenge that has been taking over social media where people set themselves on fire and post the video online.
Investigators have charged Janie Talley with contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile. She is accused of being present and recording her 16-year-old son as he poured fingernail polish remover over his body and set himself on fire.
The victim sustained minor burns on his chest and neck. Police say the video was posted on Facebook on July 29th. A few days later, Youth Crime detectives were notified by DSS and immediately began an investigation.
Facebook has recognized the danger in this activity and has removed similar videos from their site to avoid copycats. CMPD says they discourage this activity due to the extreme danger it poses to everyone involved and take all complaints seriously.
