PITTSBURGH (AP) β The Tigers say pitcher Justin Verlander is scheduled to undergo an MRI in Detroit today. The 2011 AL Cy Young Award winner pitched only one inning of last night’s 11-6 loss in Pittsburgh because of soreness in his right shoulder, surrendering four earned runs on four hits and two walks. Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said he took him out as a precautionary measure.
BALTIMORE (AP) β Baltimore Orioles third baseman Manny Machado had to be helped off the field after spraining his right knee in last night’s 11-3 rout of the New York Yankees. Machado twisted his knee while hitting a broken-bat grounder to shortstop in the third inning. The Orioles said Machado would be examined again today.
PITTSBURGH (AP) β Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen has landed on the 15-day disabled list because of a broken rib suffered Aug. 3. The reigning National League MVP had been listed as day to day, but the team moved him to the DL after waiting a week to see how it would heal. The Bucs filled the roster spot by promoting right-hander Casey Sadler from Triple-A Indianapolis.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) β U.S. Ryder Cup team captain Tom Watson says it would be foolish for him not to consider Tiger Woods as one of his wild-card selections. Watson praised the nine players that have earned a spot on the team and says he will give serious thought to choosing Woods, despite his off season. This year’s Ryder Cup is being played in Scotland next month.
BELLEVUE, Wash. (AP) β Seattle Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch is being investigated by Bellevue, Washington, police to determine if he was involved in an assault and damage of personal property. The incident was reported by the female victim about 12 hours after it took place at a downtown Bellevue apartment. Police say there was no domestic violence or sexual assault involved in the allegation.
