WASHINGTON, D.C. — A change of power Thursday night in Iraq.  Prime Minster Nouri Al-Maliki is giving up his post.  He says he won’t be the cause of any bloodshed, and believes his decision to step down will protect the country’s interest.

The announcement comes hours after President Obama announced the U.S. had made progress in its attack on ISIS militants.  “Where we have hit them, we believe we have been effective.  We have disrupted their activities, that we have made them rethink what they’re doing up there,” said Pentagon Press Secretary Rear Admiral John Kirby.

The U.N. estimates more than 400,000 Iraqis have now fled from their homes in fear of ISIS.
