UNDATED (AP) β The Atlanta Braves stayed six games behind the NL East-leading Washington Nationals and cut Oakland’s lead in the AL West to one game over the Los Angeles Angels. The sputtering Braves had dropped 12 of 15 before sending the A’s to their fifth loss in six games, 7-2 in Atlanta. Freddie Freeman belted a three-run homer to put Atlanta ahead 5-0 in the third, one inning after Justin Upton and Evan Gattis hit solo shots.
UNDATED (AP) β Kansas City’s lead in the American League Central is back up to 1 Β½ games over Detroit. Josh Willingham lined a three-run double while the Royals scored five times in the fourth inning of a 6-4 triumph at Minnesota. Robinson Cano (kah-NOH’) lifted his average to .330 by going 2-for-4 with a solo homer and two runs scored in Seattle’s 7-2 triumph at Detroit, putting the Mariners a half-game ahead of the Tigers for the final AL wild-card berth.
LOS ANGELES (AP) β The Milwaukee Brewers scored five times in the eighth inning to turn a 2-0 deficit into a 6-3 win over the Dodgers in Los Angeles. Pinch-hitter Lyle Overbay snapped a 2-2 tie with a three-run double to cap the rally. Yasiel Puig went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI singles for the Dodgers.
ST. LOUIS (AP) β The Brewers still own a two-game lead over St. Louis in the NL Central. Lance Lynn allowed a run and six hits in six innings to push the Cardinals past San Diego 4-2 in St. Louis. Matt Adams and Jhonny Peralta (JAH’-nee peh-RAHL’-tah) each had two hits and an RBI in the Redbirds’ third consecutive win.
CLEVELAND (AP) β Baltimore’s lead in the AL East remains 7 Β½ games over Toronto after the Orioles and Blue Jays lost. Mike Aviles homered in the bottom of the 11th to give the Indians a 2-1 victory over the Birds in Cleveland. Jose Abreu (ah-BRAY’-oo) had three hits and three RBIs in the Chicago White Sox’s 11-5 mauling of the Blue Jays.
