CHARLOTTE, NC – A man accused of shooting two CMPD officers and a 10-year-old girl faces a judge Tuesday. Brandon Brewer faces 21 charges including attempted first-degree murder.
That 10-year-old girl, Shanise Laney, showed WCCB where she hid as shots fired into her family’s home. “The gunshot from the window blasts towards me, and it hits me exactly right here (in the face),” she said.
Police arrested Brewer after a SWAT standoff Sunday on Kingville Drive. Investigators say pellets from Brewer’s shotgun hit the girl and the first two officers to respond. “I really didn’t feel much until he stopped firing, and I ran to the bathroom, and my brother noticed I was bleeding,” Laney says.
Officers Kevin Stafford and Eric Bojaj are out of the hospital. Laney only has a couple of band-aids on her face. Police were in the area for a domestic violence call earlier in the day, but couldn’t find a victim. They returned when they got the call that a man was shooting.
Court documents reveal Brewer has a violent past. Prison records show he was released in October 2012 after serving almost six years for robbery with a dangerous weapon. Brewer is accused of hitting a man with a 2-by-4 to rob him in 2005. In one case, Brewer took a car, in another, cash and a cell phone.
Back at the house, damage is still visible. Laney’s brother says police eventually helped the family escape through a back door. “They started running. They broke the fence to pieces to get us safe over there,” Jonathan Laney says.
