POPE-IRAQ

Pope OKs protecting Iraq minorities, wants UN OK

ABOARD THE PAPAL PLANE (AP) β€” Pope Francis has endorsed the use of force to stop Islamic militants from attacking religious minorities in Iraq. But Francis said the international community β€” and not just one country β€” should decide how to intervene.

Francis was asked by reporters if he approved of the unilateral U.S. airstrikes on militants of the Islamic State. Its fighters have captured swaths of northern and western Iraq and northeastern Syria and forced minority Christians and others to either convert to Islam or flee their homes.

He said “it is licit to stop the unjust aggressor.” He explained that the “verb ‘stop'” does not mean to bomb or make war. Church teaching allows for “just wars.”

Francis also said he and his advisers were considering whether he might go to northern Iraq himself to show solidarity with persecuted Christians. But he said he was holding off for now on a decision.

POPE-US VISIT

Pope hopes to visit United States next year

ABOARD THE PAPAL PLANE (AP) β€” Pope Francis says he hopes to travel to the United States in September 2015 for a possible three-city tour. The visit would include a rally in Philadelphia, an address to Congress and a stop at the United Nations.

He said a Mexico stop on that trip was possible but not decided yet. He also said he might make one-day visit to Spain next year.

Francis made the comment to reporters on his way back from South Korea.

POPE-ROMERO

Pope eyes fast beatification for Salvador’s Romero

ABOARD THE PAPAL PLANE (AP) β€” Pope Francis has opened the way to a quick beatification for Oscar Romero, saying there are no more doctrinal problems blocking the process for the slain Salvadoran archbishop who is one of the heroes of the liberation theology movement in Latin America.

Romero, the archbishop of San Salvador, was gunned down in 1980 while celebrating Mass. He had spoken out against repression by the Salvadoran army at the beginning of the country’s 1980-1992 civil war between the right-wing government and leftist rebels.

Francis told journalists traveling home from South Korea that Romero’s case had previously been “blocked out of prudence” by the Vatican’s Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith but has now been “unblocked.”

The congregation launched a crackdown on liberation theology under then-Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, fearing what was deemed as Marxists excesses. The movement holds the view that Jesus’ teachings imbue followers with a duty to fight for social and economic justice.

EUROPE-IRAQ

UK Iraq mission no longer strictly humanitarian

LONDON (AP) β€” Britain has moved past a strictly humanitarian mission in Iraq β€” and the country’s leader warned that the effort won’t be over any time soon.

Prime Minister David Cameron said the British government has “fully worked through” its strategy and stressed troops would not get involved in another war.

With critics warning of mission creep, Britain’s opposition Labour Party and Church of England leaders have accused the government of having no “coherent or comprehensive approach” to fighting the extremists or to protecting Christians from persecution.

The Yazidis, practitioners of an ancient faith, and other minority groups have been fleeing members of the Sunni extremist Islamic State group.

RWANDA-RICK WARREN

Rick Warren hopes to expand his ministry to East Africa

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) β€” Pastor Rick Warren says he hopes to expand his ministry to East Africa.

Warren, who visited Rwanda this past week, told The Associated Press that the church can play a role in building strong institutions in Africa.

The conservative pastor addressed a big rally in the Rwandan capital of Kigali (kee-GAH’-lee) on Sunday during thanksgiving celebrations marking 20 years since the genocide in which more than 800,000 people were killed.

Warren’s California-based Saddleback Church has been working in Rwanda since 2004 after Rwandan President Paul Kagame (keh-GAH’-may) read Warren’s bestselling book “The Purpose Driven Life.” Since then more than 1,200 members of the church have come to Rwanda as missionaries.

GAY MARRIAGE-VIRGINIA

Delay responses filed in Virginia gay marriage case

WASHINGTON (AP) β€” The clock is ticking on whether the U.S. Supreme Court will delay a ruling striking down Virginia’s same-sex marriage ban.

Attorneys representing a county clerk in Virginia have asked the nation’s highest court to stay the decision by the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals while it’s appealed.

The plaintiffs and others yesterday asked that the ruling issued in late July not be delayed and that the case be reviewed as quickly as possible. Virginia is supporting a delay to minimize disruptions while the issue is resolved.

Unless the court intervenes, same-sex marriages could begin Thursday. The state also would need to start recognizing out-of-state gay marriages.

The request will either be considered by Chief Justice John Roberts or the full court. It has twice granted delays in related cases.

GAY MARRIAGE-ARKANSAS

Couples: Deny stay in Arkansas gay marriage case

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) β€” Couples challenging Arkansas’ gay marriage ban have asked the state Supreme Court to deny the state’s request to delay proceedings in the lawsuit pending a possible U.S. Supreme Court ruling in a similar case.

A judge in Little Rock threw out the state’s same-sex marriage ban in May and more than 500 same-sex couples received marriage licenses before the state’s high court issued an emergency stay. Earlier this month, the state’s attorneys asked the Arkansas Supreme Court to suspend proceedings until the U.S. Supreme Court rules in a similar case.

PRIEST-SOLICITATION-HIV

Judge postpones Ohio priest’s soliciting sex trial

CLEVELAND (AP) β€” A judge has postponed the trial of a priest who was accused of soliciting sex at a Cleveland park and earlier tested positive for HIV.

The judge said he wants to consider whether the charge should remain a felony.

The Rev. James McGonegal (muh-GAHN’-ee-gul) was arrested nearly a year ago after he allegedly solicited a park ranger near downtown Cleveland. He was charged with felony soliciting because he previously tested positive for HIV.

The priest’s attorney argues that the felony charge should be tossed out because he says the likelihood of infecting a potential partner is slim.

CHURCH STABBING

Worker stabbed at popular San Francisco church

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) β€” Police say one person is in custody in connection with the stabbing of a staff worker at a popular church in San Francisco.

San Francisco Police spokesman Officer Gordon Shyy says the worker suffered nonlife-threatening injuries after being stabbed in the shoulder inside Glide Memorial Church yesterday morning. Glide spokeswoman Denise Lamott says the worker was treated by his co-workers and then paramedics before being taken to a local hospital.

Police say a man allegedly involved in the stabbing fled from the church but was found on a nearby bus and detained by officers a few blocks away.

The church, located in the city’s rugged Tenderloin neighborhood, is nationally renowned for its social activism and its annual Thanksgiving dinner that serves thousands.

CHURCH DOORS SHOT

State police: Church doors shot up, casings found

KANE, Pa. (AP) β€” State police are trying to figure out who shot up a small church in rural northern Pennsylvania.

Troopers in Kane say officials at Faith Church in Liberty Township arrived Sunday morning to find someone had shot through both front doors of the church. It’s located near Port Allegany, about 130 miles north of Pittsburgh.

Police say someone used two guns β€” one a .357 caliber, the other a 9mm β€” and that one of the shots resulted in a bullet found lying on a pulpit seat.

Police say they also found some 30 empty shell casings in the church parking lot, but no other bullet holes beyond the two found in the front doors of the church.

Police haven’t identified or charged any suspects.
