Moped Driver Killed After Pulling Away From Police

 SHELBY, N.C. — A moped driver was killed in a crash after pulling away from police around 8:45 p.m. Tuesday.

Officer Jarrett Willis pulled the moped over at the intersection of Pinkney Street and Patton Drive where the passenger got off. The officer started walking toward the moped and the driver drove off and hit a 2011 Chevrolet Traverse at the next intersection.

After crashing into the vehicle, the moped hit a utility pole at Graham Street and Patton Drive where the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

The name of the driver will be released after their family has been notified. 

Mandi Langley, driver of the Chevrolet and the passengers were transported to Cleveland Regional Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. 

No charges have been filed. Investigators are still determining whether speed or alcohol were contributing factors in the crash.
